Her Story

October 17, 2008. A typical Friday night in Isla Vista (I.V.). My five housemates and I decided to throw a highlighter party at our Del Playa (D.P.) apartment. Hundreds were invited, but only those sporting white shirts and carrying highlighters were allowed inside.

Black lights replaced the fluorescent lights in the living room and kitchen, making it easy for everyone to see the words and pictures they were drawing on each other’s shirts.

At some point in the middle of the party, and after a few shots, I stumbled to the back of the bathroom line. So many people were waiting that I ended up standing in the living room, next to the foosball table.

I laughed out loud as someone drew glasses on my face with a yellow highlighter, tickling my nose.

Though the music was turned up high, Garret heard the laugh—which he thought of as stoner-y but would later learn it was my regular laugh—and moved toward the foosball table.

We started talking, and soon decided to play a game of foosball. I was obsessed with the game, having played in many impromptu tournaments throughout my time at UCSB. More people joined in, and Garret and I decided to team up.

Garret took offense and I got on defense. Within seconds we had scored our first goal against their opponents.

“Nice shot,” I said.

The two of us were unstoppable. Five games and ten different people later, and we were undefeated.

Elated, Garret picked up me to celebrate. At 6’3, he was easily able to lift up my 5’2 frame so that we were nose to nose.

“We won!” he said, putting me down. He pulled out his phone. “Let me get your number.”

I smiled. He had passed my foosball test. “Sure,” I said. “But just so you know, I’m much better with texts.”

That night, Garret signed up for a text-messaging plan.

OUR STORY

His Story

Sabrina started dropping hints about rings and ring styles that she liked about a year before I proposed.  From the beginning she had always said she wanted something “simple” but the rings she showed me told a very different story (see the “Disney Princess Rings” on Pinterest if you want to see what I mean).  After looking for months at rings I finally settled on a ring that I knew she’d love.  Then the last piece of the puzzle was to decide how to propose.  I decided that Thanksgiving would be the best choice since it’s her favorite holiday and I knew she would like to have her parents around.

On Thanksgiving Day I put the ring in my pocket hoping to think of the right moment.  While at dinner I remembered her parent’s foosball table and I knew that would be the perfect place.  I figured when we got back from dinner I could get Sabrina and her parents up to the foosball table and surprise her with the ring there.  But, everyone was so tired after indulging in the turkey that we all went to sleep almost immediately…

I was determined to get her “yes” the next morning so I came up with a new plan.  I told Paul I was planning on proposing, and he said “Well that’s a good idea.”  I also asked for his help getting Val to the foosball table without her figuring out what was going on.  We decided to play a game with the 4 of us, and I’d hide the ring in the goal for Sabrina to find.  Unfortunately, despite getting scored on at least 5 times, Sabrina never noticed the ring box (which took up at least 80% of the goal).  We won the game without her noticing, so I pulled the ring out and proposed the old fashioned way down on one knee.
